The best video interview software for most teams in 2027 is VidCruiter if you hire 100+ people a year, Willo if you want fast asynchronous screening without an annual contract, and Hireflix if you are a small team on a budget. The right pick depends on three things: whether you need live interviews, one-way (recorded) interviews or both; how much AI scoring you are allowed to use in your hiring markets; and which ATS it has to plug into.
Phone screens are the most expensive part of early-stage hiring that nobody budgets for. A recruiter running 15-minute screens for a role with 200 applicants loses days to calendar ping-pong and repeated answers. Video interview platforms replace that with recorded answers the whole hiring team can review in an evening, or with structured live interviews that capture notes and scores automatically.
This guide compares the leading platforms on interview formats, AI features, integrations, candidate experience and real pricing, with picks for small businesses, high-volume employers, enterprises and recruitment agencies.

What is video interview software?
Video interview software lets employers screen and interview candidates over video, with the recording, scheduling, scoring and sharing built in. Most teams buy it to replace the first-round phone screen, which is where recruiters lose the most hours for the least information.
The category now covers three different formats. Knowing which one you need is the single biggest factor in choosing a platform.
| Format | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-way (asynchronous) | Candidates record answers to set questions in their own time, with a timer and a set number of retakes | First-round screening, high-volume roles, candidates in other time zones | Some candidates find talking to a camera awkward; completion rates drop if instructions are poor |
| Live (two-way) | A scheduled interview over video, with scorecards, notes and recording added | Second and final rounds, senior hires, panel interviews | Needs scheduling; adds little if you already run interviews well on Zoom or Teams |
| AI interviewer | An AI agent asks the questions, adapts follow-ups and produces a summary or score | Very high-volume frontline and graduate hiring | Candidate trust, and legal rules on automated decisions in the EU, UK and several US states |
Most mid-market platforms now offer one-way and live in one product. A growing number add an AI interviewer or interview intelligence layer, which transcribes, summarises and scores interviews that happen on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams.
Do you need dedicated software, or is Zoom enough?
If you hire fewer than 10 people a year and only run live interviews, Zoom or Teams plus a shared scorecard is usually enough. Dedicated software starts to pay for itself when one of these is true:
- You screen more than 20 applicants for a typical role
- Hiring managers struggle to find time for first-round calls
- You hire across time zones or for shift workers who cannot take calls during office hours
- You need consistent, structured scoring you can defend if a hiring decision is challenged
- You want recordings and scores to flow back into your ATS automatically
The best video interview software in 2027: full reviews
1. VidCruiter: best overall for mid-size and enterprise teams
Best for: organisations hiring 100+ people a year, including public sector and multi-country employers.
VidCruiter has grown from a video tool into a full interview management system. It runs one-way, live and hybrid interviews, and its live calls can happen in its own video room or inside Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. That last point matters: hiring managers keep the tool they know, and VidCruiter still captures the notes, transcript and rating guide.
The AI is built around structured interviewing rather than gut feel. Start from a job title or a job description pulled from your ATS, and it suggests requirements, then interview questions and rating guides to match. A question checker flags weak questions and suggests better ones. For recorded interviews, AI can score each answer against the rating guide and explain why, and that scoring can be switched off for markets with strict rules on automated decisions (SSR review).
Key features
- One-way, live and hybrid interviews, plus smart scheduling with branded self-booking
- AI-generated questions, rating guides, transcripts and summaries, with optional AI scoring for recorded answers
- Deepfake detection and a setting that stops a recording if the candidate leaves the screen
- Native integrations with Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle, UKG, Dayforce and ADP
- SOC 2 and ISO certifications, regional data hosting, and 24/7 live support
Pricing: quote-based on hiring volume. SSR’s research puts typical contracts from about $5,000 a year. There is no free trial.
Pros
- The most complete structured-interview workflow in this list
- Works with the video tools your hiring managers already use
- Strong security and compliance credentials for regulated employers
Cons
- Setup takes real effort for complex, multi-workflow rollouts
- AI scoring covers recorded interviews only, not live ones
- Overkill for teams hiring a handful of people a year
2. Willo: best for asynchronous screening at scale
Best for: teams of any size that want fast, well-structured one-way screening, from occasional hirers to graduate and frontline programmes.
Willo does one thing and does it well: asynchronous screening. Candidates can answer by video, audio or text, upload files and switch from laptop to phone by QR code. Support is available to candidates around the clock, which protects completion rates.
Its Blueprint feature turns your job description, scorecards and hiring manager notes into role criteria, then scores each candidate against them with timestamped evidence from their answers. You can see exactly why someone ranked highly, instead of trusting a black-box number. Willo also builds identity, right-to-work and background checks into the same flow, which is useful for UK employers (Willo pricing).
Key features
- Video, audio, text, multiple choice, file upload and ID check question types
- 18+ candidate languages, practice questions and 24/7 candidate support
- AI transcription, summaries, follow-up question drafting and criteria-based scoring
- 50+ native ATS integrations on Enterprise, including Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle, iCIMS, Greenhouse, Pinpoint and Teamtailor
- ISO 27001 certified and GDPR compliant
Pricing: Willo Lite is pay-as-you-go at £49 / $59 per live role per month, with no contract, up to 5 live roles and 5 users. Enterprise starts at £2,999 / $3,799 a year, with discounts on two- and three-year terms. Non-profits get 50% off.
Pros
- No-contract option is rare in this category and ideal for occasional hiring
- Transparent, evidence-backed AI scoring
- Excellent candidate experience and support
Cons
- No live interviews; you schedule those in your own calendar tools
- Native ATS integrations, SSO and the AI tools need the Enterprise plan
- The old free plan has been retired
3. Hireflix: best value for small and mid-size teams
Best for: startups and SMBs that want simple, unlimited one-way interviews at a fixed price.
Hireflix is the easiest platform here to roll out. Candidates click a link and record: no app, no account and no login. Every plan includes unlimited users, positions and interview responses, so you never pay more for a busy hiring month (Hireflix pricing).
It is deliberately narrow. There are no live interviews and no AI scoring, but everything you need for one-way screening is there: custom think and answer times, retakes, branded intro and outro videos, white-labelling, automatic transcripts, and invitations and reminders by email, SMS or WhatsApp.
Key features
- Unlimited users, jobs and responses on every plan
- Custom domains and white-label branding
- Bulk CSV invites and shareable public interview links
- Native integrations with Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, Ashby, BambooHR, Teamtailor, Recruitee, SmartRecruiters and JazzHR, plus Zapier, Make and a GraphQL API
- GDPR and SOC 2 compliant, with SSO and audit logs
Pricing: $75 a month billed yearly for companies under 50 employees, and $150 a month for 50 to 250 employees. Larger organisations and agencies get a custom quote. Startups under two years old and NGOs get 20% off the first year.
Pros
- One of the lowest fixed prices in the category, with no usage caps
- One-month free trial with every feature
- Very low friction for candidates
Cons
- One-way only, with no live interviews or scheduling
- No AI scoring
- Fewer native integrations than enterprise platforms

4. Spark Hire: best for SMBs and staffing agencies
Best for: small and mid-size employers and staffing firms that want unlimited one-way and live interviews without per-interview fees.
Spark Hire’s video product does not cap interviews on any plan: you can run as many one-way and live interviews as you like. Hiring managers can review and rate candidates through share links without logging in, which removes a common bottleneck (Spark Hire pricing).
The AI layer is practical rather than flashy. It transcribes interviews in 50+ languages, summarises responses, scores submissions against factors you choose, and flags one-way answers that look scripted or AI-generated so a person can check them. If you also need an ATS, Spark Hire sells one with video interviews built in.
Key features
- Unlimited live and one-way interviews on every plan
- Branded candidate portal with intro and outro videos
- Invites by link, SMS or bulk CSV, with automated reminders
- 40+ ATS integrations, a Chrome extension and Zapier
- SOC 2 Type II, with 24/7 support for you and your candidates
Pricing: from $299 a month month-to-month (up to 5 active jobs and 5 users), or from $249 a month billed yearly with unlimited jobs and users. Prices vary by company size. API access, SSO, extra brands and some HRIS integrations (Workday, UKG Pro, Dayforce) are paid add-ons.
Pros
- No interview limits, which suits agencies and seasonal hiring spikes
- Strong collaborative review for hiring managers
- Monthly option if you cannot commit to a year
Cons
- No free trial
- The monthly plan’s 5-job and 5-user limits pinch quickly
- Several enterprise integrations cost extra
5. Jobma: best all-in-one for video, AI interviews and skills tests
Best for: global mid-size and enterprise teams hiring at volume, especially multilingual or technical roles.
Jobma puts one-way and live interviews, an autonomous AI interviewer, coding tests and written and audio questions on one platform. AI features are included in a single subscription rather than sold as add-ons, according to SSR’s review.
Recent additions focus on integrity and speed: identity verification inside the interview, side-by-side candidate comparison, explained AI resume scores, and practice sessions so candidates can rehearse the AI interview before it counts. Proctoring flags multiple faces or voices, copy-paste and window switching.
Key features
- One-way, live and AI-led interviews, plus coding, written and audio assessments
- Voice clarity, pronunciation and tone analysis for language-critical roles
- Resume scoring and knockout filters
- Native ATS integrations, plus Zapier
- SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, CCPA and NYC AEDT compliance
Pricing: annual and quote-based, scaled by company size, volume and integrations. A free trial is available after a demo.
Pros
- Widest range of interview and assessment formats in one tool
- AI included rather than bolted on as paid modules
- Mobile app and strong multilingual support
Cons
- No public pricing
- Coding tests are less deep than specialist tools like HackerEarth
- More platform than a small team needs
6. Criteria: best for science-backed, AI-scored interviews
Best for: employers that want structured interviews and validated assessments in one place, with scoring they can explain.
Criteria comes from the assessment world, and it shows. Interview questions are matched to the role and tied to research-backed competencies. Its Interview Intelligence model scores the transcript only, not facial expressions, voice or accent, which lowers bias risk and is easier to defend to candidates and regulators. SSR reports the model was trained on more than 5,000 interviews hand-scored by Criteria’s psychologists (SSR review).
Key features
- Role-based structured interview templates and evaluation guides
- Transcript-only AI scoring
- Unlimited access to Criteria’s cognitive, personality and emotional intelligence tests
- 60+ ATS integrations and an open API
Pricing: custom. Interview Intelligence and proctoring are paid add-ons. A free trial is available online.
Pros
- The most defensible AI scoring approach in this list
- Combines interviews and assessments in one candidate journey
- Strong fit for high-volume roles with clear competencies
Cons
- No live interviews
- Best features cost extra
- Asks more time of candidates than a short video screen
7. HireVue: best for enterprise and very high-volume hiring
Best for: large employers hiring thousands of hourly, campus or professional candidates a year.
HireVue is the category’s best-known enterprise suite. It combines video interviewing, an AI interviewer, assessments, scheduling and automation, and it publishes an AI explainability statement. It holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001, offers 24/7 support in 20+ languages, and says it is the only virtual interviewing and assessment provider with FedRAMP certification (HireVue).
Key features
- One-way and live video interviews, an AI interviewer and game-based and skills assessments
- Interview scheduling and workflow automation
- Cheating and fraud mitigation
- Deep integrations with major enterprise ATS and CRM platforms
Pricing: custom, through sales.
Pros
- Built for scale, with a large body of validation research
- FedRAMP certification for US public sector buyers
- Free for candidates, with no app download
Cons
- Priced and designed for enterprises; a poor fit below a few thousand employees
- Longer procurement and implementation
- Its AI-driven assessments draw more scrutiny from candidates than simpler tools
8. BarRaiser: best interview intelligence for live and technical interviews
Best for: larger tech and product teams running many in-depth live interviews.
BarRaiser does not host one-way interviews. Instead, its AI copilot sits inside Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams calls. It suggests job-specific questions before and during the interview, nudges interviewers back to the structure, takes notes and helps score the candidate afterwards. It also coaches interviewers, which matters when dozens of engineers interview part-time.
Key features
- Live AI interview copilot with real-time question suggestions
- AI notes, highlights and interviewer coaching
- Two-way integrations with 40+ ATS tools
- SOC 2, GDPR and NYC AEDT compliance, per SSR
Pricing: SSR lists a free plan with five interviews and a Team plan at about $75 per interviewer a month, capped at 30 interviews. Enterprise is custom. Confirm current plans with BarRaiser, which has recently expanded into candidate sourcing.
Pros
- Excellent for structured technical interviews
- No new video tool for interviewers or candidates
- Free plan to test it
Cons
- No one-way interviews
- Team plan caps get restrictive
- Expensive for small companies
9. 1Way Interview: best low-cost option for very small businesses
Best for: businesses under 50 staff, agencies and frontline employers screening many customer-facing candidates.
1Way Interview is built for owners and small teams with no recruiter. Start with knockout questions shared on job boards or social ads, then invite qualified applicants to a video or skills step. An AI checker reviews text, video and form answers, and funnel analytics show where applicants drop out, so you can fix instructions that lose people.
Pricing: SSR reports a 14-day free trial and annual plans from $13.99 a month (Starter) to $209.99 a month (Unlimited) (SSR).
Pros
- The lowest entry price in this list
- Self-serve setup with guided videos
- AI checks at a price small firms can afford
Cons
- No live interviews
- Newer, with a shorter track record than Hireflix or Willo
- Not built for enterprise needs
Also worth a look
- Avature: deep control over live and on-demand interviews for enterprises already using its CRM
- interviewstream: a large library of around 1,500 ready-made questions
- Harver: assessment-led platform with capable one-way and live interviews
- Recright: video interviewing paired with a native ATS, suited to multi-branch and global organisations
- Pinpoint, Teamtailor and Greenhouse: if you already use one of these ATSs, check whether its built-in or partner video tools cover your needs before buying another product
Which video interview platform is best for you?
Match your situation to the shortlist below, then book demos with two or three vendors at most.
| Your situation | Start with | Also consider |
|---|---|---|
| Small business hiring a few roles a year | Willo Lite (pay per role, no contract) | 1Way Interview, Hireflix |
| Startup or SMB hiring steadily | Hireflix | Spark Hire |
| Staffing or recruitment agency | Spark Hire | Hireflix (custom plan), Willo Enterprise |
| High-volume frontline, retail or hospitality | Willo Enterprise | Jobma, HireVue |
| Graduate and early-careers programmes | Willo Enterprise | HireVue, Criteria |
| Mid-size company, structured interviews across many managers | VidCruiter | Jobma |
| Enterprise with Workday, SAP or Oracle | VidCruiter | HireVue, Willo Enterprise |
| Technical and engineering hiring | BarRaiser (live) | Jobma (async plus coding tests) |
| You want assessments and interviews together | Criteria | Jobma, Spark Hire (behavioural assessment) |
| UK and EU employers cautious about AI scoring | Willo or Hireflix | VidCruiter with AI scoring switched off |
Two patterns stand out. If your main problem is the volume of first-round screens, an asynchronous tool like Willo or Hireflix will save the most time for the least money. If your problem is inconsistent interviews across many hiring managers, a structured-interview platform like VidCruiter, or an interview intelligence layer like BarRaiser, will do more for quality of hire.
How to choose video interview software
Start with the hiring problem, not the feature list. Most failed purchases in this category come from buying an enterprise suite to fix a scheduling problem, or a cheap one-way tool to fix inconsistent interviewing.
Buyer checklist
- Interview format. One-way only, live only, or both? Do you want an AI interviewer at all?
- Volume. How many candidates per role, and how many roles a year? This decides whether per-role, per-user or flat pricing is cheapest.
- ATS integration. Is there a native, two-way integration with your ATS, or only Zapier? Check whether it is included or a paid add-on, and on which plan.
- Candidate experience. Can candidates join from a phone browser with no app or login? Are there practice questions, retakes and support outside office hours?
- Accessibility. Can candidates answer by audio or text, request more time or switch to a phone interview as a reasonable adjustment?
- AI controls. Can you switch AI scoring off per role or per country? Does it score the transcript only, or also voice and video?
- Fraud prevention. Look for ID checks, deepfake detection and flags for AI-written or read-out answers. This has become a real issue in remote hiring.
- Data and security. Where is video stored? Can you set retention periods and delete on request? Ask for SOC 2 or ISO 27001 reports.
- Branding. Custom intro videos, colours and domains make the experience feel like your company, not a third-party tool.
- Total cost. Add up add-ons for SSO, API access, extra brands and enterprise integrations before comparing headline prices.
Questions to ask in every demo
- “Show me the full candidate journey on a phone, from invite to submission.”
- “What is your average completion rate for one-way interviews, and what do your best customers do differently?”
- “Which ATS integrations are native and two-way, and which plan are they on?”
- “Exactly what does your AI evaluate, and can we turn each AI feature off?”
- “Do you have a recent independent bias audit, and can we see the summary?”
- “How do you detect AI-generated or read-out answers and deepfakes?”
- “Where is candidate data hosted, and how long do you keep it by default?”
- “What does it cost in year two, and what triggers a price increase?”
Red flags
- AI that scores facial expressions, tone of voice or “personality” from video, with no clear explanation of how
- No way to switch AI scoring off for specific countries or roles
- Pricing that only appears after several sales calls
- Integrations listed on the website that turn out to be Zapier-only
- Long contracts with no trial, pilot or exit clause
How much does video interview software cost?
Expect to pay from under $1,000 a year for a small team’s one-way tool to $5,000 and well beyond for enterprise platforms. Vendors price in four main ways, and the right model depends on how evenly you hire.
| Pricing model | Example | Cheapest when |
|---|---|---|
| Per live role | Willo Lite: £49 / $59 per role per month | You hire a few roles, a few months a year |
| Flat subscription, unlimited use | Hireflix: $75/month billed yearly; Spark Hire: from $249/month billed yearly | You hire steadily all year |
| Per interviewer seat | BarRaiser Team: about $75 per interviewer/month | A small panel runs many live interviews |
| Custom annual contract | VidCruiter, Jobma, Criteria, HireVue | You need enterprise integrations, AI scoring and support |
A quick worked example. A 30-person company hiring three roles a year, each open for two months, would pay about $354 on Willo Lite (6 role-months at $59) against $900 a year for Hireflix’s Small plan. A company with roles open all year round flips that maths quickly, and unlimited plans win.
Watch for add-ons that change the real price: SSO, API access, extra brands, premium ATS connectors (Spark Hire charges extra for Workday, UKG Pro and Dayforce), AI scoring modules and ID or right-to-work checks.
AI, compliance and fairness: what to know before you switch AI on
AI features are now standard, but the rules on using them in hiring are tightening. The safest approach is to use AI for transcripts, summaries and question design, keep a person making the decision, and only switch on AI scoring where you can explain it to a candidate.
- EU: AI used to screen or evaluate job candidates is classed as high-risk under the EU AI Act. After the Digital Omnibus, those high-risk obligations now apply from 2 December 2027, not August 2026 (FPF). Vendors and employers should use the extra time to get documentation, human oversight and bias testing in place.
- UK: The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 relaxed the rules on automated decision-making from 5 February 2026, but added safeguards. In March 2026 the ICO reported that many employers who called their tools “decision support” were in practice making solely automated decisions, and it has signalled enforcement (DLA Piper). Make sure a person genuinely reviews AI scores before anyone is rejected.
- Illinois: The Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act requires employers that use AI to analyse video interviews for Illinois-based roles to notify candidates, explain how the AI works, get consent first, limit sharing, and delete videos within 30 days of a request (Illinois General Assembly).
- New York City: Local Law 144 requires an annual independent bias audit and advance notice to candidates before using an automated employment decision tool.
- Elsewhere in the US: Colorado’s AI Act has been delayed and challenged in court, and other states are drafting similar laws. Check the current position with your employment counsel.
Platforms that let you switch scoring off by country (VidCruiter), score transcripts only (Criteria), or show the evidence behind every score (Willo) make compliance much easier.
Candidate experience: protect your employer brand
A video interview is often the first time a candidate meets your company “in person”. Done badly, it feels like shouting into a void; done well, it is a chance to sell the job.
- Open with a human. Record a 60-second intro from the hiring manager explaining the role and why you use video.
- Keep it short. Three to five questions and under 15 minutes is plenty for a first round.
- Give time and retakes. Allow at least a few days to complete, generous think time, and one or two retakes per question.
- Show them first. Use practice questions and tell candidates exactly what to expect and who will watch.
- Offer alternatives. Let candidates answer by audio or text, or request a phone call, as a reasonable adjustment.
- Close the loop. Tell every candidate the outcome. Several platforms automate personalised feedback, so there is no excuse for silence.
Candidates talk. The way you run this step will show up in your reviews on Glassdoor and Indeed long after the role is filled.
Video interview software FAQs
What is the best video interview software?
For most mid-size and large employers, VidCruiter is the most complete option, covering one-way, live and structured interviews with strong compliance controls. Small teams get the best value from Hireflix or Willo Lite, and staffing agencies usually prefer Spark Hire for its unlimited interviews.
What is the best free video interview software?
Truly free plans are rare now. BarRaiser offers a free plan for a handful of live interviews, and Hireflix gives a one-month free trial of every feature. For occasional hiring, Willo Lite’s pay-per-role pricing with no contract is the closest thing to free. If you only run live interviews, Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams with a structured scorecard costs nothing extra.
What is a one-way video interview?
A one-way, or asynchronous, video interview is one where candidates record answers to set questions in their own time, rather than talking to an interviewer live. Recruiters and hiring managers review the recordings later and rate them against the same criteria.
Are one-way video interviews fair to candidates?
They can be fairer than phone screens, because every candidate gets the same questions and is scored on the same criteria. They are less fair when instructions are unclear, there is no practice question, or there is no alternative for candidates who need adjustments. Good platforms offer audio and text answers, retakes and extra time.
Is it legal to use AI to score video interviews?
In most places yes, with conditions. Illinois requires notice, an explanation and consent before AI analyses a video interview. New York City requires a bias audit for automated hiring tools. In the UK, candidates must have meaningful human review of significant automated decisions, and in the EU, AI used in recruitment becomes high-risk under the AI Act from 2 December 2027.
Can candidates cheat in video interviews?
Some try, by reading AI-written answers or using a stand-in. Leading platforms now flag scripted or AI-generated responses, run ID checks, detect deepfakes, and spot window switching. Treat these flags as prompts for a human to look closer, not as automatic rejections.
How long should a one-way video interview be?
Three to five questions, with one to three minutes per answer, is enough for a first round. Long interviews lower completion rates, especially among strong candidates with other options.
Does video interview software integrate with my ATS?
All the platforms in this guide integrate with the major ATSs, including Greenhouse, Lever, Workable and BambooHR. Enterprise connectors for Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle and UKG are more limited and sometimes cost extra, so confirm before you sign.
How we chose the best video interview software
We compared platforms on six criteria, weighted towards what affects hiring outcomes day to day:
- Interview formats: one-way, live, AI-led, and how well each is executed
- Candidate experience: mobile access, no-login joining, languages, practice questions and accessibility options
- Structure and AI: support for structured interviews, how transparent AI scoring is, and whether it can be switched off
- Integrations: depth of native ATS and HRIS connections and what they cost
- Security and compliance: certifications, data residency, retention controls and readiness for AI hiring laws
- Pricing: transparency, flexibility and total cost including add-ons
We checked each vendor’s pricing and product pages in November 2026, and drew on independent hands-on testing published by SelectSoftware Reviews. Prices and features change often, so confirm details with vendors before you buy.
The verdict
If you take one thing from this guide: buy for the problem you actually have.
- Drowning in first-round phone screens? Start with Willo or Hireflix.
- Need consistent, defensible interviews across many managers and countries? Shortlist VidCruiter.
- Running an agency or seasonal hiring? Spark Hire‘s unlimited interviews will pay off.
- Hiring at enterprise scale? Compare VidCruiter, Jobma and HireVue side by side.
Whichever you choose, run a two-week pilot on one live role, watch the completion rate, and ask a few candidates what they thought before rolling it out.
